COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Senate has its first female sergeant-at-arms.

Suzanna “Suzie” Dawson, a retired police lieutenant from Granville, was sworn into her new job June 3.

Dawson joins a four-member team that provides security for Senate members and staff and to members of the public visiting Senate chambers, offices and committee rooms.

She spent 28 years with the Granville Police Department.

During a career that began as a dispatcher, Dawson became the department’s first female supervisor in 2016. She most recently served as a sergeant and was promoted to lieutenant upon retirement.

Dawson said she’s committed to making Senate members, staff and visitors “feel welcome and safe.”

Senate President Larry Obhof and Sen. Jay Hottinger administered her oath of office.
