Is Kirtland Park one possible protester camp site?

The City of Cleveland made it clear protester camping will not be allowed inside the "event zone" during the Republican National Convention.

But is a camp site outside the event zone under consideration?

Sources told newsnet5.com that one possible site is Kirtland Park at E. 49 and S. Marginal Road.

The city has still yet to confirm the location, but Organize Ohio Director Larry Bresler believes Kirtland Park would be an excellent location for protesters to set-up camp sites.

Bresler said a designated camp location for protesters is badly needed.

"There is obviously no hotel space for them to stay in, said Bresler.  "And we're trying to find space for people in church basements and what not, but there is not any available."

"It's going to be within walking distance of one of the local recreation centers so people can bathe and take care of themselves.  That's going to be important of anyone that wants to camp out."

Kirtland Park is in Councilman Jeff Johnson's ward, and Johnson also agrees the park would make an outstanding choice.

Residents like Mark Kyles, who lives near the park, told newsnet5.com Kirtland Park is a perfect location because it isn't near a residential area.

"Well those who have those opinions can come out here and it would peaceful without being in neighborhoods where it might not a good idea to protest."

Several calls to the city to get confirmation on the potential use of Kirtland park were not returned.
