Browns super fan bears name of new QB RG3

Posted

It's no secret the Browns are in the midst of a major overhaul. The team has new management, a new coach and now another new quarterback

But as Robert Griffin III gets settled in the orange and brown, it turns out he's not the first RG3 to call Cleveland home.

That is perfectly fine with one die-hard and lifelong Browns fan that just happens to be his namesake. Exactly.

Robert Lee Griffin III was born and raised in Olmsted Falls and is a Browns fan through and through. His daughter and her husband started calling him RG3 when this Griffin made his Heisman Trophy run at Baylor University and had early success with the Washington Redskins.

Now that RG III is actually here with the Browns, Rob Griffin is hoping he will do the family name and Northeast Ohio proud.

"From afar, you know, Baylor and the Heisman run and then Washington, OK kind of off to the side but now that he's with the Browns, you know my team, it is surreal," said Griffin.

Adding to the connection is that RG3's birthday, February 12, is the same birthday as one of Griffin’s granddaughters and the same date as his daughter Stephanie’s wedding anniversary.

While he doesn’t have his official team jersey with his name on it just yet—and that of the other RG3—Griffin knows he will have a few goosebumps when the quarterback runs out of the tunnel for Cleveland’s home opener against Baltimore in September.

"A lot of pride, a lot of pride,” Griffin said. “I'm sure again the phone will blow up when he gets on TV in a Browns jersey with my name on the back."
