Weather with Webb: Vernal Equinox Sunday

and last updated

Spring fever, anyone?!

Well, in meteorological terms, spring sprung March 1, but it officially begins Sunday. Even though it has been a mild winter across Northern Ohio, we'll wave goodbye to winter at 12:30 a.m.

So what does this day really mean?

Astronomically, March equinox is the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, but marks the fall season in the  Southern Hemisphere.  On Sunday the sun will be directly over the earth’s equator,  which means everyone on earth will have equal day and equal night. This is where the term "equinox" stems from.

Even more great news about moving into spring: more daylight to come!

This alone adds another whopping six minutes of sunlight to our day. By Sunday will be sitting at 12 hours and 10 minutes of daylight. This year, spring arrives a whopping 18 hours earlier then in 2015.

So does this mean you can lose the winter coats? We won't say that just yet. In late March 2015, we saw trace amounts of snow and even got .8" of snow on April 23 in Cleveland.

Enjoy the transition into Spring!

P.S. Summer starts June 20, 2016.
