Horses and other farm animals were rescued by the Portage APL after receiving reports of animal abuse on Friday.

Among the animals rescued were:

  • Three sheep
  • Four horses
  • Two geese
  • Two ducks
  • 20 chickens
  • One cat

Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary assists the Portage APL when necessary. Because the Portage APL doesn't have a facility that houses farm animals, the animals were taken to the sanctuary.

Chalan Lowry, executive director of the Portage APL, said when a humane agent goes to a property where there are reports of animal neglect, the APL tries to work with the owner to improve the health and welfare of the animals.

But in this case, the situation was too dire to leave the animals alone.

Lowry said because Portage Co. is mostly rural, they do receive calls of large farm animals in poor situations, but it's not that often. The last call they received was in December for neglected horses.

With vet bills in the foreseeable future, Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary is asking for donations from the public.
