ATHENS, Ohio — The Halloween party that Ohio University students attend annually, which draws thousands to the streets of Uptown Athens, has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to The Athens News.

Athens Police Chief and Interim Service Safety Director Tom Pyle said in an email that the city decided to cancel the annual Halloween Party, originally scheduled for Oct. 31, because of the pandemic and the state’s recommendation for celebrating Halloween.

Pyle said failure to abide by the restrictions could result in a second-degree misdemeanor.

The Ohio Department of Health recently issued guidance on celebrating Halloween. For example, it recommends not holding any large in-person Halloween parties. It also strongly recommends that hayrides, haunted houses and trick-or-treating be canceled or avoided.
