AKRON, Ohio — An Akron police officer sustained minor injuries Thursday when his cruiser was hit by a car while he was leading the funeral procession for a woman killed in a murder/suicide allegedly involving a Twinsburg firefighter.
The funeral procession for Olivia Hamey had just left Newcomer Funeral Home and was heading to the cemetery when a Chevrolet Malibu that wasn’t part of the procession slammed into the police officer’s vehicle near Darrow Road and Congo Street, Akron police told News 5 reporter Bob Jones.
The officer’s shoulder was injured in the crash. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The driver and passenger of the Malibu were both taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital with minor injuries.
The Malibu's driver, a 21-year-old woman, has been charged with driving under a suspended license and failure to give the right of way to a funeral procession.
