AKRON, Ohio — Funeral arrangements have been announced for fallen Akron Officer Edward Stewart who died from complications of COVID-19 on Feb. 12.

Callings hours will be held Feb. 19 from 12:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, located at 529 West Thornton Street in Akron.

Masks are required as well as following other COVID-19 safety protocols upon entry to the funeral home.

Stewart had been hospitalized with the virus since December.

"We had all held out hope and offered prayer that he would recover, and unfortunately, he didn't and that's the tragedy here," said Lt Michael Miller, who considered Stewart a good friend.

The veteran cop worked in the patrol division for 27 years. He was assigned to Platoon 3 and served as a transport wagon officer.

A private funeral will be held Saturday, followed by a motorcade that is scheduled to arrive in front of the Akron Police Department at approximately 1:15 p.m.
