AKRON, Ohio — Access to public transportation just became easier for residents in Summit County.

METRO Regional Transit Authority and the Akron-Summit County Public Library are teaming up to offer free rides to library cardholders on the first Thursday of every month.

Beginning Thursday, passengers on line-service routes can ride free when they show their Akron-Summit County Public Library card to the bus operator upon boarding.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. It’s held every year to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the American Library Association and libraries across the country collaborate on a national effort to ensure every child signs-up for their own library card.

Officials say the goal is to provide easier access to community resources by removing transportation barriers.
