CLEVELAND — The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is asking for volunteers to help sort and repack food that will be distributed to people in need across Northeast Ohio.

“The recent concerns around the COVID-19 (coronavirus) have reminded us that our community is stronger when we work together and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank needs your support in these uncertain times,” the food bank said Thursday in a news release.

The food bank is also implementing precautionary measures to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. Those measure include cleaning high-touch areas such as doorknobs, counters, bathrooms, phones and keyboards. Additionally, the food bank said it will sanitize pick-up and drop-off sites “to ensure the health and safety” of its drivers.

The food bank said it wants to remind volunteers about the following:

  • We ask that all volunteers that are not feeling well to please cancel their scheduled shifts and join us for a future opportunity once they are feeling better.
  • We ask that all volunteers that are displaying signs of illness not volunteer until their symptoms have improved.
  • We require all volunteers to wash their hands prior to handling food or materials in any of our volunteer project areas.
  • For certain projects, we will require all volunteers to wear gloves, hairnets, and/or aprons for the duration of their shifts.

“The safety and well-being of our clients, partners, volunteers and staff is our top priority. We are in ongoing communications with our partners, staff and volunteers to maintain safe practices that will ensure nutritious food continues to be distributed throughout our six-county service area,” the food bank stated.

Anyone who wants to volunteer for repacking, the community food kitchen, produce distribution or special events can do so, here. Skill-based volunteers can sign up, here. To register for a group of volunteers, click here.
