CLEVELAND — A 65-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly shot his significant other in the hip accidentally at a home on East 125th Street early Friday morning.
Police responded to the home near Locke Avenue at about 2:25 a.m., according to Cleveland police report. They were met by the alleged shooter, who told police he had just shot his significant other, a 62-year-old woman.
Police spoke to the victim’s niece, who said she was sleeping when she heard a noise, and then a gunshot. She said the shooter then told her: “Call the ambulance! I shot your auntie!” The niece then called 911.
The alleged shooter told police he was in bed half-asleep and he remembers his significant other moaning. He said, “What happened?” then looked down and saw the gun in his hand. He said he dropped the gun, ran to the door, and told the niece to call the ambulance because he had shot her aunt. The alleged shooter then ran out into the street.
Police arrested the man for felonious assault, accidental shooting, the report states. He is not being identified by News 5 because he has not yet been formally charged.
The victim was taken to University Hospital, but police were unable to speak with her because of the extent of her injuries.
