EAST CLEVELAND — A driver in a U-Haul truck led East Cleveland police on a chase for over 20 minutes throughout Cleveland on Monday morning, according to East Cleveland Police Chief Scott Gardner.
It all started at around 2:43 a.m., when officers responded to a call for a male dumping tires in the area of Hayden Avenue.
The driver, who had multiple felony warrants for felonious assault, a drug offense and obstructing justice, told police he sells tires and had paperwork.
Shortly after the interaction with police he fled in the U-Haul truck. News 5 photojournalist Mike Vielhaber witnessed the chase as the driver led police down East 55th Street, Chester Avenue and along Euclid Avenue and East 30th Street.
During the pursuit, he struck an RTA bus at Eddy Road and St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland.
An investigator with the East Cleveland Police Department said the driver had been involved in over 20 pursuits in the last month while in the U-Haul, including with the department and several with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
After the pursuit, the driver fled on foot and ditched the truck on West 56th Street. He was located by K-9 Jack several blocks away while hiding in some bushes.
