LAKEWOOD, Ohio — There’s something happening in Lakewood that will have ice cream lovers screaming. Malley’s is moving forward with plans for a walk-up window to serve a sweet treat. It’s a business plan that’s had big success in other locations, compared to just curbside pick up.

The walk-up ice cream service and even outdoor seating has been a part of Malley’s plan for improving customer service for awhile now, and thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, that plan may finally be out into action.

Back in May, plans for a walk-up window at Malley’s chocolates were approved by the Lakewood Architectural Board of Review.

The board also wanted the company to include bike racks in the final plan. During the pandemic, Malley’s has cut its in-store capacity to about 50% to comply with health regulations.

Malley’s has been looking for more creative ways to service their customers. Stores currently offer curbside pickup and with the stores like Bay Village and Mentor having a walk-up window, adding one at the Lakewood location seemed like a logical solution.

"You know, curbside is just a little different. It's not the same as going up to an ice cream counter and ordering your stuff so we're trying to meet the customers where they feel comfortable,” said a Malley’s spokesperson.

Plans are still being finalized, but when asked for a timeline, the company says this project likely wouldn’t be completed until the end of summer.
