Ashtabula became the first city in the area to ban plastic straws with a city council vote Monday night.
The council voted 7 to 0 to enact the ordinance effectively banning plastic straws unless requested.
The vote was spurred by a group of kids nearly two years ago when they picked up hundreds of straws at Eagle Beach. The movement, led by Kids for Positive Change, got 10 Ashtabula businesses to agree to go plastic-straw-free.
From there, the kids wrote up the ordinance requiring Ashtabula businesses to only offer biodegradable straws, or plastic for those that need them upon request.
The ordinance passed Monday night.
