3-year-old girl dies following fire inside Garfield Heights apartment

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — A 3-year-old girl was killed following an apartment fire in Garfield Heights Sunday, the Garfield Heights Fire Department confirmed.

Firefighters responded at 11:30 p.m. to the 4600 block of East 131st Street for a fire in an apartment.

Heavy flames and smoke were seen coming from the apartment. Firefighters contained the fire to one unit.

A 3-year-old girl, identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office as Kamari Maddox, died as a result of the fire.

The Red Cross responded to help the displaced family.

The state fire marshal is investigating the fire.
