85-year-old homeowner identified as victim of Parma Heights house explosion

PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio — The person who was found dead after a home exploded in Parma Heights on Dec. 21 was identified Monday by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The victim was identified as 85-year-old James Bartko, the owner of the home.

Parma Heights police are still working to determine the cause of an explosion at the house in the 6300 block of Mallo Place.

On Dec. 21 around 1:15 p.m., police received multiple 911 calls that a house had exploded in Parma Heights. Crews from the Parma and Parma Heights police departments as well as members of the Parma, Parma Heights, Brook Park, North Royalton, Brooklyn and Middleburg Heights fire departments all responded to the call, according to police.

Bartko’s body was found inside the home, but he was not identified until more than a week after the incident.
