BRATENAHL, Ohio — A Bratenahl police officer is recovering after being hit by an impaired driver.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said troopers received a call around 12:45 a.m. about a disabled bus partially blocking the roadway.

Before troopers arrived, they were called about an injury crash on I-90 West near Eddy Road.

When troopers arrived, they learned that a police cruiser had been parking in the right lane of the interstate to protect the disabled bus.

While an officer inside the cruiser was diverting traffic, a gold 2005 Chevrolet Impala driven by Vernon Wright, 61, struck the cruiser from behind, according to troopers.

The 42-year-old Bratenahl officer was transported to the hospital but was released with minor injuries.

Wright refused medical treatment at the scene and was released to the custody of troopers.

He has been charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, driving under suspension and failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead.

This is the second time this month an officer has been struck in that same area.
