ATWATER TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A 33-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in Atwater Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 4:50 a.m. on State Route 183 near Virginia Road.
The man has been identified as Joshua D. Deck, of Alliance.
OSHP said that Deck was driving a 1999 Dodge Stratus north on SR 183 when he went off the road, back onto it and then off again and hit a utility pole.
Deck wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle when it crashed, authorities said. The car burst into flames a short time later.
A passerby pulled Deck away from the area and administered first aid until authorities arrived.
Deck was pronounced dead at the scene, according to OSHP.
“This is an absolute tragedy,” said Lt. Jeffrey Greene, OSHP Ravenna Post commander. “Had Mr. Deck chose to properly apply his safety belt, the outcome may have been much different.”
The crash remains under investigation. Impairment doesn’t appear to be a factor in the crash, OSHP said.
