The body of a man was recovered from the swimming area at Portage Lakes State Park Tuesday evening, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Around 2:45 p.m., New Franklin Police and Fire responded to the Portage Lake State Park Swim Beach after witnesses reported that a man in the designated swimming area did not resurface while swimming, New Franklin Fire said.
New Franklin officers were the first on scene and entered the water to locate the man without success, New Franklin Fire said. The Summit County Water Rescue Team and the Akron Fire Department Dive Team then responded to the scene to assist in the search.
Divers found the man about 150 offshore in about 10 feet of water, New Franklin Fire said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
ODNR said officers closed the beach while they conducted the search for the man.
