CANTON, Ohio — A long-awaited trial is now underway for two Canton police officers accused in the death of a man while he was in police custody more than two years ago.
The case has faced multiple delays since the officers were indicted, but now Jury selection will begin Monday inside Judge Kristin Farmer’s courtroom.
Camden Burch and Beau Schoenegge are on trial in connection with the death of 53-year-old Frank Tyson. Both officers are facing reckless homicide charges related to Tyson’s death.
Tyson died on April 18, 2024, while in police custody.
Canton Police say officers found a power pole in the roadway and Tyson’s empty vehicle nearby. Witnesses later directed officers to Tyson, who was across the street at the AMVETS lodge.
Body camera video shows a struggle between Tyson and officers, before he was eventually restrained on the ground.
At one point, video shows one officer with a knee on Tyson’s back while he was handcuffed.
During the encounter, Tyson repeatedly said he could not breathe. Officers began CPR about seven minutes after Tyson was handcuffed and continued those efforts for roughly 10 minutes.
Tyson was later pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy ruled his death a homicide.

The trial is expected to last at least two weeks, with several witnesses expected to testify. If convicted, the officers could face up to 36 months in prison, fines of up to $10,000, and the loss of their jobs.
Due to the high-profile nature of the case, the sheriff’s office says visitors should expect longer screening times at the courthouse entrance.
Seating inside the courtroom will also be limited.
Farmer has also banned clothing displaying messages or statements related to the case.
