12-year-old boy dies after being struck by car on I-90 in Cleveland Friday afternoon

CLEVELAND — A 12-year-old boy who was hit by a car Friday afternoon on I-90 in Cleveland has died, according to authorities.

The incident happened on Interstate 90 about a half mile from the Ontario Street exit. Police said that the boy was struck by a car while running onto the freeway.

The boy was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. According to police, he later succumbed to his injuries.

A preliminary investigation indicates that “the boy was at a group home in the 2300 block of West 14th Street when he ran for reasons unknown and ran up the freeway ramp from West 14th Street onto I-90,” police said.

The group home where the boy resided, the Rose-Mary Center, issued a statement on his death.

Rose-Mary is working closely with police and investigators as answers to questions surrounding the accident are sought. Mason City Schools in Warren County said in an email that the district is mourning the loss of 12-year-old Jared Camacho, who they say was struck by a car in Cleveland Friday.

"Staff and students loved Jared, who attended Mason since preschool. He was bright and funny with such a warm heart. He loved playing outside, swinging, drawing, and putting things together," the district said.

According to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner, a 12-year-old boy named Jared Camacho died in Cleveland Friday.

No additional information has been released.
