COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Health reported 6,823 new COVID-19 cases in the state today, bringing the total number of cases to 1,268,841. Wednesday's number of new daily cases, hospitalizations and ICU admissions was higher than the 21-day average.

Back in March while the state was still mostly under lock down, Gov. Mike DeWine said he would lift health orders if Ohio went below 50 cases per 100,000 people for two weeks. Since then, the state has fully reopened and there are no health orders. Currently, Ohio is averaging 472.4 cases per 100,000 people over the past two weeks.

Despite those numbers, state health officials and the governor haven't reinstated any sort of mandate. Instead, they have urged people to wear masks and get vaccinated but gone no further.

Rising cases have prompted local businesses and venues to take matters into their own hands. Most recently, Severance Hall and Playhouse Square announced guests will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative test within three days of the show they are seeing.

Key Metrics

The number of new cases today is higher than the rolling 21-day average of daily cases, which is 4,797. These numbers include both cases confirmed by a viral test and cases that meet the CDC's definition of probable. There have been 1,049,094 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date, which account for 83% of total cases.

To date, there have been 127,879 total coronavirus cases reported in Cuyahoga County.

There have now been 21,020 coronavirus-related deaths across the state; no new deaths were reported today as the state changes the frequency in which mortality is reported. There were 73 deaths reported on Tuesday, the last day ODH reported new COVID-related deaths.

As other states do not send the death certificates for Ohioans who die out of state to ODH's Bureau of Vital Statistics on a regular schedule, the mortality data provided by Ohio will continue to fluctuate and those deaths will be assigned to their appropriate dates.

As of today, 1,151,966 Ohioans are presumed recovered from the disease, according to the ODH.

The median age of patients is 40 with the age range for infected patients from younger than 1 year old to 111 years old.
