Jan. 22: Ohio reports record-high 35,046 new COVID-19 vaccinations, 4,278 new cases, 81 new deaths

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Health reported 4,278 new COVID-19 cases in the state today, bringing the total number of cases to 853,982.

Key Metrics

The number of new cases today is lower than the rolling 21-day average of daily cases, which is 7,314. These numbers include both cases confirmed by a viral test and cases that meet the CDC's definition of probable. There have been 749,592 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date, which account for 88% of total cases.

There were 437 new cases reported in Cuyahoga County today.

There have now been 10,599 coronavirus-related deaths across the state; 81 new deaths were reported today, higher than the 21-day average of 78.

As of today, 720,171 Ohioans are presumed recovered from the disease, according to the ODH.

The median age of patients is 43 with the age range for infected patients from younger than 1 year old to 111 years old.

Hospitalizations

The ODH reported 204 new hospitalizations today, with 20 ICU admissions. There are currently 3,270 COVID-19 patients in Ohio's hospitals, and 819 COVID-19 patients in the ICU.

Non-COVID patients are currently occupying 62.20% of the state's hospital beds, according to ODH. COVID-positive patients account for 11.83%, leaving 25.98% of beds currently available. COVID patients make up 17.10% of the state's ICU beds, non-COVID patients are occupying 59.53% of ICU beds, and 23.37% of ICU beds are currently open.

Testing

There were 59,445 tests done on Wednesday, the latest day this data from the ODH was available. Of those tests, 8.4% were positive, compared to the rolling 7-day average positivity rate, which is 10%. Click here for details on where to get a COVID-19 test in your area.

Vaccinations

To date, the COVID-19 vaccine has been started in 535,086 people in Ohio, which is 4.58% of the state's population. The vaccine has been started in 35,046 people in the last 24 hours, a record-high number of daily vaccinations. The previous high was on Dec. 30, when the vaccine was started in 34,897 people.

The state has not yet released data on how many vaccinations have been completed with a second dose.
