COLUMBUS, Ohio — More than a quarter-million people in Ohio are still unemployed, according to the most recent unemployment data released by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services.

A total of 16,294 initial jobless claims were filed from Sept. 6 to Sept. 12 by Ohioans. That is 257,921 or 6% fewer claims than what was filed during the peak time this year, ODJFS stated. Additionally, 320,532 continued jobless claims were filed last week. That’s 455,770 claims less than what was filed during the peak.

Ohioans have filed more initial unemployment claims during the past 26 weeks than the previous four years, ODJFS stated.

The agency said it has distributed more than $6.3 billion in unemployment compensation to more than 804,000 Ohioans. ODJFS has received around 1 million applications for unemployment benefits and more than 94% of those have been processed. ODJFS said it has also issued more than $5.6 billion in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) payments to the more than half a million people who filed the claims.
