Ohio Department of Health reports 15,989 new COVID cases, highest 'true' daily count so far

COLUMBUS, Ohio — On Thursday, the Ohio Department of Health reported 15,989 new COVID-19 cases in the state, bringing the total number of cases to 1,896,577. This is the highest number of "true" cases to date that were not inflated by a backlog of cases.

Key Metrics

The number of new cases today is higher than the rolling 21-day average of daily cases, which is 8,966. These numbers include both cases confirmed by a viral test and cases that meet the CDC's definition of probable. There have been 1,500,464 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date, which account for 79% of total cases.

Hospitalizations

The ODH reported 345 new hospitalizations today, with 20 ICU admissions. There are currently 4,747 COVID-19 patients in Ohio's hospitals, and 1,208 COVID-19 patients in the ICU.

Non-COVID patients are currently occupying 58.7% of the state's hospital beds, according to ODH. COVID-positive patients account for 18.5%, leaving 22.8% of beds currently available. COVID patients make up 25.96% of the state's ICU beds, non-COVID patients are occupying 55.03% of ICU beds, and 19.02% of ICU beds are currently open.

Testing

There were 35,805 tests done on Monday, the latest day this data from the ODH was available. Of those tests, 22.5 percent were positive, compared to the rolling 7-day average positivity rate, which is 20.9. Click here for details on where to get a COVID-19 test in your area.
