COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Health reported 8,178 new COVID-19 cases in the state today, bringing the total number of cases to 690,748.
Key Metrics
The number of new cases today is higher than the rolling 21-day average of daily cases, which is 8,126. These numbers include both cases confirmed by a viral test and cases that meet the CDC's definition of probable. There have been 620,181 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date, which account for 90% of total cases.
There were 716 new cases reported in Cuyahoga County today.
There have now been 8,855 coronavirus-related deaths across the state; 133 new deaths were reported today, higher than the 21-day average of 79.
As of today, 546,305 Ohioans are presumed recovered from the disease, according to the ODH.
The median age of patients is 43 with the age range for infected patients from younger than 1 year old to 111 years old.
Hospitalizations
The ODH reported 366 new hospitalizations today, with 36 ICU admissions. There are currently 4,409 COVID-19 patients in Ohio's hospitals, and 1,087 COVID-19 patients in the ICU.
Non-COVID patients are currently occupying 57% of the state's hospital beds, according to ODH. COVID-positive patients account for 16%, leaving 27% of beds currently available. COVID patients make up 22% of the state's ICU beds, non-COVID patients are occupying 54% of ICU beds, and 23% of ICU beds are currently open.
Testing
There were 23,295 tests done on Dec. 28, the latest day this data from the ODH was available. Of those tests, 19.1% were positive, compared to the rolling 7-day average positivity rate, which is 13%. Click here for details on where to get a COVID-19 test in your area.
Vaccinations
To date, the vaccine has been started in .8% of the state's population — 94,078 people — with 22,471 new vaccines started in the last 24 hours.
