Ohioans filed nearly 50,000 initial jobless claims last week

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The number of Ohioans who filed initial jobless claims last week reached nearly 50,000, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

From Jan. 24 to Jan. 30, Ohioans filed 47,786 initial jobless claims, which was 226,429 fewer than the peak last year.

Over the last 46 weeks, the total number of initial jobless claims filed in Ohio reached 2,275,898, which according to the state, was more than the combined total of those filed during the last five years.

In the week ending on Jan. 30, Ohioans filed 278,102 continued jobless claims, which was 498,200 fewer than the peak last year.

The ODJFS distributed more than $8.2 billion in unemployment compensation payments to more than 916,000 Ohioans.

If you find yourself in need of work, ODJFS has launched the "Ohio To Work" initiative to help displaced workers re-skill and restart their careers. The agency also has partnered with local workforce development boards and local staff to provide employment and training services at Ohio Means Jobs centers throughout the state.
